William Michael
Barnes
June 2, 1952 – February 4, 2026
William Michael "Mike" Barnes, 72, of Valdese, NC, peacefully passed away on February 4, 2026, at UNC Health Blue Ridge. Born June 2, 1952, in Burke County to the late John Frances Barnes and Vera Louise Barnes, William lived a life marked by intelligence, kindness, and a gift for bringing joy to others.
Mike earned an Associates degree and spent much of his working life in manufacturing before later becoming a truck driver. He was known for his strong work ethic and the way he treated people-with sincerity, respect, patience, and an open heart. A Christian in his private life, Mike's faith showed most in how he lived, his study of scripture and how knowledgeably he would speak about scripture.
He loved to dance and could light up a room with his presence. Mike was a talented singer and guitar player, and his incredible singing is one of the ways many will remember him best. Mike was highly intelligent, something reflected by his curious and sharp mind. He was an avid reader with an incredible mechanical mind, knowledge, and ability. Mike was a true lover of animals and had many special pets throughout his life, each holding a unique place in his heart.
Family meant everything to Mike. He cherished time with loved ones, enjoyed serving others in any way he could, and was famously fond of peanut butter cream pies. Those closest to him often described him as a "doll of a man"—accepting of anyone and everyone, and the kind of person who made others feel seen and welcomed.
He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Lisa Coline Barnes of Connelly Springs; his grandson, Zachary Christian Hollar; and his sisters, Brenda Parham and Angela Danner. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Mike was preceded in death by the love of his life, Lottie Faye Moody; his brother, Johnny Barnes; his half-brother, Earl Barnes; and his parents.
Mike's legacy of music, warmth, and wholeheartedness will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
