Obituary

THOMAS EDWARD CONLEY

August 29, 1941 - December 4, 2023

Thomas Edward Conley, 82, a son of the late William "Buster" Conley and Gladys Elizabeth Avery Conley, was born August 29, 1941, in Morganton.  He answered the Savior's call on Monday, December 4 while at Meridian Center, in High Point, NC.  Following graduation from Olive Hill High School, class of 1960, Tommy attended NC A&T State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology followed later by graduate studies leading to a Master of Business Degree in Counseling.  In 1966 he enlisted in the US Air Force where he served for four years in air traffic control.  Prior to relocating to High Point, he worked for a time at Broughton Hospital.  While residing in High Point, Tommy was employed by Davidson Community College   as a financial counsellor to middle and high school students.  He was also the Financial Aid Officer at North Carolina Central University until he retired in 1992.

While growing up in Morganton, he was a member of Shiloh AME Church.  Most of his adult life, however, was spent in High Point, where he was an active member of Greater First United Baptist Church.  Until his health failed, he was a former trustee, sang in the Missing Man Choir, United Voices Gospel Choir and was also active with the Men's Ministry.  As a proud Aggie fan, Tommy looked forward to going to A&T's football games with his good friend Frank Fleming.  He had many hobbies that he enjoyed including hunting and fishing with his buddies.  As a hunter, he enjoyed feasting on wild game dinners with his friends and he always took lots of pictures of family and friends wherever he went.  Other hobbies were taking his pontoon boat out on the lake and cruising the highway on his Honda motorcycle which he often would ride to Morganton for a visit.  In his spare time, he also loved tinkering with his "toys", which is what he called his old cars, boats, and motorcycles.  He especially loved Corvettes.  Preceding Thomas in death, in addition to his parents, were his siblings Clyde Avery, Beatrice C. Poole and husband Jack, Harry Conley, Janet C. Wilson and husband Amburst; sister-in-law Alice Kathleen Conley and nephews Neal and Harvey Poole.

Those left to cherish his memory include his sister Ida Jean Conley Carter (Robert) and brother William "Bill" Conley, Jr., both of Morganton; special friend and long-time caregiver Donice Roberts, High Point, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
