Obituary

Shirley Juanita Johnson Kincaid, a cherished soul whose life illuminated the hearts of many, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2026, at UNC Health Blue Ridge. Born on November 30, 1935, in Burke County, her journey was one marked by steadfast dedication, compassion, and a deep-rooted faith that she carried with dignity until her final days. A woman of unwavering faith and gentle strength, she was born with a servant's heart, devoting her life to honoring God, uplifting others, and living out the values she held dear.

Educated in the Burke County School System, Shirley's life was one of quiet accomplishment and enduring strength. For many years, she devoted her professional talents to the textile industry, where her work ethic and commitment were held in high regard. Beyond her career, she was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where her spirit found solace and community in equal measure.

Her departure leaves a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved her. Shirley was the beloved daughter of Vono Shakespeare Johnson and Margaret Fullwood Johnson, both of whom preceded her in death. She also joins her son, Phil Atlas Kincaid, and sister, Margaret Ann Berry, who wait for her beyond.

Surviving Shirley are the cherished members of her family who carry forward her legacy of love and resilience. Her children: Marculette Chambers (Gary Dean), Teressa Bratton (Ronald – Deceased), Audwin Kincaid (Beverly Crisp) stand united in remembrance of their mother’s nurturing affection. She is also survived by her sister, Maseline Berry, who shares in the solace of family remembrance.

The joy Shirley found in her grandchildren is evident in the lives of Ronald Bratton Jr., Jenny Lynn, Kisha Kincaid, Shirlette Chambers, Tammara Chambers, and Phillip Jovan Kincaid. This circle of kinship extends further, encompassing her great-grandchildren Kailen Bratton, Kasaan Lytle, Daylen Davis, Tre Barnes, Isaiah Bratton, Rhinna Bratton, Irie Bratton, and the newest blossom of the family tree, great-great-grandchild Kinston Bratton.

Enriched by family, and marked by quiet dignity. Her memory will forever be etched in the stories of those who loved her and in the hallowed halls of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where her faith blossomed and flourished. Shirley poured her gifts into every ministry she touched. She served faithfully in the Culinary Ministry, Seniors Ministry, Deaconess Ministry, Senior Choir, and on the Sunday School Leadership Team, offering her time, her talents, and her warm spirit with grace and humility. Her service was not simply participation - it was ministry from the heart. She leaved behind a legacy of love, commitment, and steadfast devotion to her church family.

Known for her kindness, her quiet wisdom, and the way she made everyone feel seen and valued, Shirley's presence brought comfort, her smile brought joy, and her faith brought strength to all who knew her. Though she will be deeply missed, her life remains a testament to the faithfulness, service, and love. Her memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of her family, her church, and all who were blessed to share in her journey.

As we bid her farewell, we hold fast to the solace that her legacy endures in every life she touched.
