Obituary

The family of Shirley Ann Shuford Johnson is heartbroken to announce her passing on July 1, 2026, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family. Born on January 26, 1956, in Catawba County, North Carolina, Shirley’s journey was marked by love, devotion, hard work, and steadfast faith—a life whose gentle touch warmed countless hearts.

From an early age, Shirley stood out for her resilience and ambition. Educated in the Catawba County School System, she dedicated herself to learning and growth, ultimately earning her Associate’s degree in Cosmetology. These skills were not merely a profession for Shirley but a pathway to connect with others, lift spirits, and embrace the beauty in every individual she encountered.

Shirley began her working years in textiles, learning the value of perseverance and craftsmanship, before going on to become a beloved local business owner. She opened her own beauty salon, touching lives with warmth, skill, and laughter. Always driven to build a better world for her family, Shirley’s entrepreneurial spirit led her to own and operate the renowned Jet Express convenient store—a local fixture known for its friendly atmosphere and her welcoming presence.

In her sacred life of faith, Shirley was a shining light at Vision Hope & Peace United Church of Worship, under the leadership of her son, Pastor Juan Johnson. Here, she sang joyfully on the Praise Team, served graciously in the Pastor’s Aide and Hospitality Ministry, and found deep fellowship in the Women's Auxiliary. Their regular gatherings—especially the birthday celebrations—were opportunities for Shirley to shower others with kindness, uplift spirits, and create treasured memories.

Shirley joins in peace her beloved husband, William Clarence Johnson ("Greasy"); her devoted parents, Russell Shuford and Elester Allen Shuford; her sisters, Juanita Byers, Esther McNeill, Maggie Mahone, and Ruby Shuford; as well as her brothers, Eugene Bivens, Russell Shuford Jr., and Johnny Ray Shuford. Their memory remains entwined with hers in the hearts of those left behind.

Her love only grew deeper in the company of her family. Shirley was the treasured mother of three sons: Juan Johnson, Shawn Johnson, and William Leon Johnson, each of whom carry forward her strength, faith, and loving example. She also leaves behind their devoted spouses, Lisa and Vanessa, as well as her dear sister, Kay Roberts, and her caring brother, Bobby Dale Bivens. Shirley’s legacy extends beyond immediate family, held dearly by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many others whose lives she touched as a steadfast friend.

The family invites friends and loved ones to gather in honoring Shirley’s remarkable life. There will be a Receiving of Friends on July 9, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Corpening Memorial Chapel of McCain Funeral Home & Cremations, LLC, located at 220 Avery Ave, Morganton, NC. This will be followed by a Homegoing Celebration service beginning at 2:00 p.m., also at McCain Funeral Home & Cremations, LLC, with livestreaming available for those unable to attend in person. Shirley will be laid to rest at Shiloh A.M.E. Church Cemetery, 1323 N. Powerhouse Rd., Morganton, NC.
