Obituary

Fighting soldier Sarah Lou Avery Hunter was called from Earth to Glory on Friday morning February 2, 2024 at 3:00 a.m. She peacefully transitioned in her sleep.  Sarah was born in Burke County July 20, 1937 to the late Lillie Avery Bristol and the late William Powell.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Winston D. Avery and sister Caroly Bristol-Harbison.

Sarah worked at Broughton Hospital, retiring after twenty-nine years of dedicated service.  She was a lifelong member of Willow Tree A.M.E. church where she served as president of the Flower Fund, member of the Senior Choir, member of Stewardess Board #2, former superintendent of Sunday School, 2nd Vide President of the Sarah Jane Missionary Society, and member of the Program Committee.  She was also WNCC Conference Branch Member Director, Director of Christian Education, member of Pride of the West Chapter 581 Order of Eastern Star Daughter of Isis, member of the Burke County Prayer Band, and a vital and dedicated Sunday School attendee and teacher of class #1, both in person and virtually, during and after the pandemic.

Sarah left to mourn her loss but cherish amazing memories are her husband Shuff Hunter III of the home, three sons Gary M. Moore of Morganton, Curtis Moore (Patricia) of Morganton, and Danny Moore (Irine) of Hickory; two daughters Connie Wingate of Morganton and Doressa Moore-Neals (Lee) of Erie, CO; eleven grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, ten great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A homegoing celebration will be held Saturday February 10, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Willow Tree A.M.E Church with Rev. Doug Cuthbertson serving as presider and Rev. Anthony Radcliff as eulogist; interment will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
