In Loving Memory

Roberta Ann Rutherford, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2023, at the age of 76 at home in Reston, Virginia. She was born in Marion, NC on September 19, 1946 to Geter and Gladys Henry.

On September 2, 1967, Roberta married Ralph Rutherford Jr, and together they embarked on a beautiful journey filled with love and shared memories. Their union was blessed with three children, Bonnie Franklin (Rutherford), Ralph Rutherford III, and Lamar Rutherford. She found great joy in nurturing and supporting each of her children as they flourished into successful and loving adults.

Beyond her roles as a wife and mother, Roberta also reveled in her role as a grandmother. Her legacy lives on through her eight beloved grandchildren: Noni, Aidan, Naia, Andrew, Christina, Aric, Lamar Jr., and Lucas. They brought eternal happiness to her life.

Tragically, Roberta battled with diabetes for many years, and despite her relentless fight, she succumbed to the illness. Though her passing leaves a sadness in the hearts of her loved ones, they find solace in knowing that she is finally free from the pain and suffering she endured. The family owes a deep gratitude to Roberta's aide, Luisa Alfonso, who went above and beyond to help Roberta through many years of her battle.

Roberta is survived by her husband, her children, her grandchildren, and her siblings: Opal Rankin, Herbert "Sonny" Henry, Arnell O'Neil, Shirley Henry, and Cleo Daugherty. Preceding Roberta in death are her parents and her siblings: Betty Mitchell, Hattie Williamson, and Jimmy Henry.

Roberta will forever be remembered for her unwavering strength and love for her family.

A graveside service will be held Sunday July 23 at 2:00 p.m. at McDowell Cemetery in Marion; there will be no public viewing.  The family will meet at McCain Funeral Home & Cremations to depart for the cemetery at 1:00 p.m.
