Ms. Pattie Sue McGimpsey Sue 85, of Morganton, departed this life on Sunday July 2, 2023, at Grace Height and Rehabilitation, after suffering from a stroke. She was born March 18, 1938 in Morganton NC to the late Mrs. Carrie Victora McGimpsey Thomas and the late Mr. Oliver Chambers and was
later raised by her stepfather, Mr. Coy Thomas.
She attended Olive Hill High School where she played snare drums in the marching band and was a member of the Debating Club, the French Club, and the Dance Club; she graduated in 1956. She then attended Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville NC, where she majored in
K-12 Education. She then attended Appalachian State University, where she majored in Special Education. She loved doing her crafts and meeting people. She also loved being around the little children where she taught them a little song that she always sang to them.
Ms. Pattie Sue McGimpsey was a member of Gaston Chapel A.M.E Church, where she served on the missionary organization. She taught in the public school system for about 8 or 10 years. She then went to West Carolina Center (J Iverson Riddle Developmental Center) for 18 Years and then transferred to Broughton Hospital for 29 years where she later retired.
She was preceded in death by four brothers Robert "Mickey" McGimpsey, Odell Thomas, Troy Lee Thomas, and Utter "Sir UT" Thomas.
She leaves to cherish her memories two children: daughter Maria Bethel (Larry) of Morganton, and a son Troy Scott of Pontiac, Michigan; two sisters Coy Ann Surratt and Mary Remona Harris both of Morganton, a half-sister Rev. Audrey Gwynn, also of Morganton, a brother Jackie Thomas of Morganton, and a sister -in- law Jacky Thomas also of Morganton; six grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
A homegoing celebration will be held Tuesday July 11, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Gaston Chapel A.M.E. Church with Rev. Wesley Hendrix serving as the presider and Rev. Tommy Carpenter as the eulogist; interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
