M orris Jeffery Norwood, 72, of Hickory, NC, peacefully passed away on October 26, 2025, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born July 21, 1953, in Catawba County, NC, to William Robert Thomas and Aneil Odessa Norwood, Morris lived a life marked by dedication to family, athletic achievement, and unwavering life for those closest to him.
A talented athlete in his youth, Morris earned All-Star honors on his basketball team, demonstrating the competitive spirit that would define his character. His passion for sports, especially football, remained a source of joy throughout his life.
Morris built a distinguished career at Thomasville Furniture, where his string work ethic earned him respect until his retirement. As a faithful member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, his spiritual foundation provided strength and guidance.
Above all, Morris cherished his family. He shared a special bond with the love of his life, Ruth Corpeniong. His greatest pride was found in his role as a father and grandfather- he loved his grandchildren dearly, creating precious memories that will be treasured for generations.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter: Mortasha Corpening (Craig Largent) of Hickory and step-daughter Urshula Steptoe of Lenoir; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; siblings: Sharon Thomas Ferguson of California, Angela Hendrix of Statesville, Karen Buffet (Clyde) of Winston-Salem, Wanda Norwood of Winston-Salem, Donnie Norwood (Alice) of Winston-Salem, Roger Thomas (Carvenia) of Morganton, Lamont Norwood of Winston-Salem, and close friends Gregory Dula and Perman Norwood.
Morris was preceded in death by the love of his life Ruth Evelyn Corpening; his parents: William Robert Thomas and Aneil Odessa Norwood; siblings: Cynthia Norwood Harshaw, Harold Norwood, William Alexander Thomas; and Grandmother Lucille Boyd Norwood.
Morris's legacy of family devotion and genuine love will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
A funeral service honoring the life of our beloved Mr. Morris Jeffery Norwood will take place Saturday November 1, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Highways to Hedges Ministry with Pastor James Wilfong serving as eulogist; interment will follow in the Harpertown Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
