Manley Louis Caldwell, age 85, of Morganton, North Carolina, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 18, 2026. He was born on June 9, 1940, to the late Hercules Caldwell and Annie Lee Ervin in Burke County. Manley lived a life defined by faith service and unwavering devotion to his family and community. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers: Charles Caldwell and Thomas Caldwell; sisters: Vivian Corpening and Geraldine Crisp; and his loving daughter Barbara Rutherford.

He was a proud graduate of Olive Hill high school where he was well known for serving as the school bus driver, a role that reflected his early sense of responsibility and care for others. Manley was married to his beloved wife, Martha Rutherford Caldwell Whom he affectionately called "Blue" for 64 years. Their marriage was a beautiful example of love, faith, and lifelong commitment.

He dedicated many years of hard work to Drexel heritage from which he retired his commitment to service extended beyond his career as he also served his community with honor and courage as he served as the lieutenant of Lake James fire department. Manley was affectionately known by a number of names throughout his life, including "Sweet Pee," "Pee Dab," "Arab," and several more. He was also known for the unique nicknames he gifted to his family members, leaving a long tradition that will forever be treasured by his family.

Left to cherish his loving memory are his devoted wife: Martha Rutherford Caldwell; his children: Edith Hunter (Jimmy) and Manuel Caldwell (Teresa); grandchildren: James Guthrie, Chad Rutherford, Darius Rutherford (Taylor), Quintin Hunter (Caroline), Lashawn Caldwell (Jarred), Jasmine Hunter, and Shamika Zigbuo (Andre); and his great-grandchildren: Amira, Avana, Austin, Remy, Ashton, Aaliyah, and LaMarkus; as well as a host of nieces and nephews

A funeral service celebrating the life and memory of Mr. Manley Louis Caldwell will take place on Friday, January 23, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Shiloh A.M.E. Church. Interment will follow at Shiloh A.M.E. Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
