Obituary

Joseph Lee Price Jr., 61, of Morganton, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Born July 8, 1964, in Burke County, Joseph’s life was marked by steady work, deep faith, and a spirit that loved to encourage others.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Lee Price Sr. and Lillian Corpening Price, and by his beloved wife, Peggy Surratt. Though he carried loss, he also carried purpose—showing up for the people and places that mattered most.

Educated in the Burke County School System, Joseph spent many years working at Breeden’s, now known as the Case Farms chicken plant. He was known as someone who did his job faithfully, day in and day out, with the kind of consistency you could count on.

More than anything, Joseph was a man of the church. A faithful member of Little Rock A.M.E. Church in Collettsville, he served under the leadership of his pastor and friend, Rev. Audrey Gwynn. Joseph didn’t just attend—he participated. He ushered, sang in the choir, played the tambourine, and never missed an opportunity to share his testimony. His praise was heartfelt, his presence was steady, and his words often lifted someone who needed it.

Joseph leaves behind those who will cherish his memory, including his bonus son, Marcus Surratt; his brother, William Happoldt; nieces Alisha Patterson, Elisha Lewis, and Monica Bellamy; and nephews Antwan Happoldt, St. Thomas Tapp, and Elder Romey Patterson.Joseph Lee Price Jr. will be remembered for his faith in action—serving, singing, testifying, and showing others what it looks like to keep going with God at the center.

A visitation with family will be held on May 2, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Gaston Chapel A.M.E. Church, located at 100 Bouchelle Street, Morganton, NC 28655. This will be immediately followed by the funeral service from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the same location.

Joseph Lee Price Jr.'s life journey was one defined by faith, family, and fellowship. His legacy of kindness, music, and devotion will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
