Honoring the Life and Legacy of Gregory Lynn Caldwell, Sr.

Gregory Lynn Caldwell, Sr., was born on September 3, 1964, in Morganton, NC, to Valeria “Vera” Caldwell and the late Robert Garmon Caldwell.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, September 30, 2026, Greg passed away peacefully after an extended illness, surrounded by the love and presence of his family. His life was defined by courage, strength, service, and an unwavering love for his family and those around him.

Greg was a proud graduate of Freedom High School, Class of 1982. Following graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. During his distinguished military career, he served multiple tours in the Middle East, including Operation Desert Storm and Operation Desert Shield. His dedication to his country was a significant part of the man he became, and his legacy of service will remain a lasting part of his story.

After retiring honorably from the military, Greg continued serving his community through his work at Foothills Correctional Institution in Morganton. Whether serving his country or his community, he gave of himself with strength, commitment, and purpose.

Greg leaves behind a legacy that reaches far beyond his years of military and community service. He leaves behind a family who loved him deeply, memories that will be cherished for generations, and a lasting example of perseverance, loyalty, and devotion. His life touched many, and the love he gave to his family and friends will continue to live on through those who knew and loved him.

He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Monica; his children, Gregory Caldwell, Jr., Jordan Caldwell, Justin Caldwell, and McKenzie Caldwell; his grandchildren, Kylan Caldwell and Gregory Caldwell, III; his devoted mother, Vera Caldwell; his sisters, Norma Caldwell Singletary (Darren), Doris Caldwell, and Mary Hayden; his brother, Rodney Finger; his nephews, Brandon Singletary, Ryan Singletary, and Kevin McCrae; his niece: Anita Hayden Harper; his special friend and best buddy, Richard Dane Baker; his mother-in-law, Brenda Jordan Holmes; his sister-in-law, Trina Holmes Patrick (Christopher); his brother-in-law, Tremayne Holmes; and a host of other relatives and friends; and was preceded in death by his infant brother, Robert Caldwell, Jr..
