George’s humble service reflected his unwavering belief in loving his neighbor

George Nelson Johnson, born February 23, 1951, in Morganton, quietly departed this life at his residence on June 26, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Those who knew him understood that his heart was as deep as his devotion to family, faith, and community.

George was a proud son of Morganton, shaped by the values imparted to him by his parents, the late Eddie Johnson II and Nellie Surratt Johnson. He grew up with a strong sense of purpose, attending the Burke County School System, where he formed lifelong friendships and learned the importance of hard work and integrity.

Throughout his life, George poured this ethic into every endeavor. For many years, he served as a floor maintenance supervisor at Western Carolina Center, now known as J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center. Within those halls, he was more than a supervisor—he was a steady presence who kept spirits high, always willing to lend his hand wherever it was needed. His helpfulness and reliability touched countless lives, making him not only a respected colleague but a friend to many.

Faith was central to George’s life. He was a faithful member of the former Logan Memorial Baptist Church, serving tirelessly as a deacon, Sunday School Teacher, maintenance person, custodian, and filling any needed capacity. Whether teaching children, caring for the church grounds, or quietly helping behind the scenes, George’s humble service reflected his unwavering belief in loving his neighbor. More recently, he was a member of the Drexel Christian Center, continuing his journey of faith and fellowship.

At home, George’s world revolved around his beloved family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Karen, whose partnership was the cornerstone of his life. Together, they created a bond of love and strength that weathered life’s joys and sorrows. His memory will be cherished forever by his children: George Nelson Johnson Jr., Kevin Johnson, Michael Johnson, and Aleisa Johnson; grandchildren: Devin Johnson, Lyrek Johnson, Jaiden Johnson, Kaitlin Johnson, Kaidence Johnson, Gavin Johnson, Brooklen Johnson, and great-grandson Kaidden Drayton. Each one carries forward pieces of their father—his unwavering values, gentle humor, and willingness to help anyone in their moment of need.

In addition to his immediate family, George is lovingly remembered by his siblings: sisters Patricia Louise Reid and Karen McCrae; brothers Eddie Johnson III, Bobby Johnson, Darrell Johnson, and Samuel Johnson; and his dear aunt, Mary Tucker. Their enduring bonds were a source of great comfort and strength throughout his life.

George shared this journey with loved ones who have gone before him, including his parents, his brothers Billy Joe Surratt and Manuel Johnson and his great-granddaughter Kailani Drayton. Though their absence is deeply felt, the legacy of their love remains alive in the hearts of those who survive.

A man of quiet dignity and ceaseless generosity, George was known for always lending a hand to anyone in need. It was this spirit of selflessness, humility, and warmth that defined his life and drew others to him, whether at work, church, or in the neighborhood.

Family and friends are invited to gather and remember George’s life on Saturday, July 18, 2026. The receiving of friends will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Corpening Memorial Chapel of McCain Funeral Home & Cremations, located at 220 Avery Ave, Morganton, NC 28655. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the same location, honoring the remarkable life he lived and the love he shared. Interment will follow at Burke Memorial Park, 2506 Burke Memorial Park Rd, Morganton, NC 28655.

George Nelson Johnson’s legacy is woven through the family he cherished, the faith he lived, and the countless hands he helped. As those who loved him mourn his passing, they also celebrate a life so graciously given—one filled with compassion, conviction, and an unfaltering kindness. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
