It is with profound sorrow that we announce the transition of Garry Melvin Moore, 68, of Morganton, who passed away on Friday, July 12, 2024, at UNC Health Blue Ridge. Born June 2, 1956 in Burke County, he was the son of the late Melvin Oscar Moore and the late Sarah Avery Hunter. He was educated in the Burke County School system and upon graduating high school, he attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University for two years. Garry worked thirty years for the NC Department of Corrections, retiring as a Sergeant. He was a member of the Willow Tree A.M.E. Church and a former member of the Masonic Lodge. Garry was known for his love of plants and collecting rocks. One of his collected rocks has been placed on display in the Morganton Historical Museum. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his spouse Mrs. Vonda Louise Hunter Moore.
Left to mourn his loss but cherish his precious memories are his children Valeria Latrice Moore and Garry M. Moore Jr., both of Morganton; his stepfather Shuff Hunter III of Morganton; his siblings Curtis West Moore (Patricia Ann) of Morganton, Danny Lee Moore (Irene) of Hickory, Roger Rutherford (Pamela) of Morganton, Connie Lou Moore of Morganton, and Doressa Moore Neals (Lee Neals) of Colorado; and two grandchildren: Omarion Charles Moore, Shkedra Damone Hudson. Also grieving are his dear friend Rita Simpson of Kentucky and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A homegoing celebration honoring the life of Mr. Garry Melvin Moore will take place Saturday July 20, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Willow Tree A.M.E. Church with Rev. Anthony Radcliff serving as the eulogist; interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
