Obituary

Mrs. Frances Josephine Mathies Patterson, 89 of Morganton, departed this earthly life for her Heavenly reward on Saturday April 29, 2023 at her residence. Born on May 28, 1933 in Burke County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Garfield Mathies and the late Frances Corpening Mathies. Josephine worked at J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center in housekeeping until she retired. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved the Lord, her church, church family, friends, and her family. She also loved traveling, gardening, and playing her piano at home. She was a lifelong member of Gaston Chapel A.M.E. Church where she served as a member of the Stewardess Board, Women's Usher board, Performing Arts Group, kitchen committee, the Gospel Choir, and the last member of the L.O. Saunders Choir. Josephine was also a former member of the Golden Circles, Spiritual Choir, Unifor Assy 361 of Morganton, and former member of the Mary McLeod Bethune Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband Rev. James J. Patterson Jr.; sons James (Pee Wee) Douglas Patterson and Steven (Shaw) Eric Patterson; sisters Rosemary Collette (and husband Wilson Collette Sr.), Delia Ophelia Corpening (and husband Felton Corpening), and Connell Mathies; brothers William Alexander Matthews Sr., Joseph Howard Matthews, Douglas Garfield Mathies Sr. (and wife Ella Jean), Arthur (RT) Nathaniel Mathies, and Edward Roscoe Mathies.

Those left to cherish her loving memories is her son Bobby Leigh Patterson of the home; Kenneth A. Mathies whom she raised as her own of Wilkesboro, NC; granddaughters Samantha Avery of Morganton and April Avery of Greer, SC; great-grandchildren Makasia Avery, Taylor Avery, Jaylen Burgess, Jasha Avery, Keyonna Avery, and Keyon Avery all of Morganton; 2 great-great grandchildren; uncle Hugh Corpening (Lula) of Morganton; Jimmy Corpening (Eloise) of Morganton; Rev. Annie Bell Corpening of Morganton; sister in law Mary Matthews of Morganton; Patricia Patterson of Sun City, AZ; Lester Patterson (Ann) of Miami, FL; Brenda Dula of Miami, FL; Sonja Harbison (Charles) of Lenoir, NC; Tim Patterson (Brenda) of Greensboro, NC; Gary Patterson (Elane) of Longview, NC; Ernest Tyrone Patterson (Carylon) of Greensboro, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. She also had a special place in her heart for Marcus and Dalvin Avery and their families

A special thanks to her care team: Dr. Martin Gessner and his assistant; Kayla of Burke Primary, and the Amorem Hospice Care Team, as well as other family and friends that assisted during her decline.

A homegoing celebration will be held Friday May 5, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Gaston Chapel A.M.E. Church; interment will follow at Burke Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service.
