Felton William
Corpening
Oct 5, 1947 — Aug 18, 2026
Winston-Salem
His was a quiet, certain kindness: the smile of a father, the wisdom of an elder brother, the encouragement of a faithful friend.
Felton William Corpening Jr. passed from this life on August 18, 2026, at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, leaving in his wake a legacy marked by devotion, service, and quiet strength. Born on October 5, 1947, in the heart of Morganton, NC, Felton’s life was a testament to commitment—to family, to faith, to country, and to the work of his hands.
Felton’s early years in Morganton were shaped by the support and love of his parents, Felton William Corpening Sr. and Cleo Harshaw, and the wisdom bestowed on him by his grandparents, Sadie Mayolia Harshaw, Nathaniel Harshaw Sr., Pearl Corpening, and Guy Corpening—all of whom welcomed him into the roots of a proud and caring family. The lessons and heritage received from them carried Felton through every stage of his life, becoming threads in the fabric of the man he would become.
Educated in the Burke County School System, Felton’s dedication showed early; he graduated from Olive Hill High School, ready to embark on the journey that would define so much of his character. Shortly after, he answered the call to serve his country, joining the US Marine Corps in 1973. As a heavy vehicle operator, Felton not only gained new skills but demonstrated steadfast patriotism, earning a National Defense Service Medal and, more importantly to him, an Honorable Discharge at the end of his service in 1976.
Returning to civilian life, Felton continued to display unwavering diligence. He worked at Bernhardt Furniture Plant, investing years of hard work and craftsmanship, regarded as a steady presence among his colleagues.
Felton’s devotion ran deepest in his spiritual life. He was a faithful member of the Restoration Christian Outreach Center, where his sister, Apostle Faye Reese-Miller, led the congregation. His faith not only anchored him through trials and triumphs but served as a gentle beacon to all who knew him.
Family meant everything to Felton. He is remembered lovingly by his children: Jerome Bryant, Dee Dee Vinson, and Eric Carson, whose lives were shaped by Felton’s example of integrity and care. His memory is further cherished by his sisters, Apostle Faye Reese-Miller, Tina Collins, and Minister Yvonne Carson, who shared deep bonds with him. Felton’s extended family includes his aunts Neter H. Gunn and Julia H. Harris, his uncle Albert Harshaw, and a caring circle of friends and loved ones, who also served as his caretakers, —Douglas Price, Jerry Robinson, Robby Corpening, and Minister Sandra Kincaid. His life was further graced by several beloved spouses: Kayla, Pastor Fred, Wayne, Ophelia, Felicia, and Charles, each holding a special place in his journey.
He was preceded in death by many dear ones, including his father Felton William Corpening Sr., his mother Cleo Harshaw, his sister Terry Lynn Corpening McLean, and all four grandparents, whose influence shaped him and continue to echo through the lives of those who survive him.
The love and friendships Felton cultivated shine on in the hearts of all whose paths he crossed. His was a quiet, certain kindness: the smile of a father, the wisdom of an elder brother, the encouragement of a faithful friend. Felton’s journey, though now complete, leaves a well-lit trail of love, diligence, and humility.
Friends and loved ones are invited to honor Felton’s memory at the Receiving of Friends, which will be held on Sunday August 23, 2026, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Corpening Memorial Chapel of McCain Funeral Home & Cremations, LLC, located at 220 Avery Ave, Morganton, NC 28655. His Homegoing Celebration will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the same location, where reflections, prayers, and tributes will celebrate a life well-lived.
Though Felton Corpening Jr. has moved on from this world, his influence remains a sustaining force for all who loved him and were loved by him. His spirit endures—as gentle as a blessing, as steady as a father’s hand.
