Mrs. Ernestine Horton Paschall-Shade was born the only child to Thomas Soloman Horton and Dorothy Inez Patterson Horton, whom were devoted Christians. Ernestine's parents were both members of Smith Memorial United Methodist Church (currently New Covenant United
Methodist Church).  Ernestine graduated in 1944 from Freedman High School in Lenoir, North Carolina. In 1948 she graduated from Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. After graduating from Bennett College, Ernestine taught in Henderson, Morganton and Sparta, North Carolina. Following her teaching career in North Carolina, Ernestine moved to Los Angeles, California where she received her Masters Degree in Education from the University of Southern California (USC) in 1957. Ernestine worked for the
Los Angeles Unified School District as a teacher for 10 years and as a Coordinator with the Child Development Division for 25 years. Ernestine was a member of the Bennett College Alumnae Association, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Council of Black Administrators in Los Angeles, California. Ernestine was united in marriage to James Arthur Paschall in 1949. The marriage was blessed
with one daughter Pamela Inez Paschall.  Ernestine is survived by one daughter Pamela Inez Paschall and one granddaughter, Christina Paschall Rankin. She was predeceased by her second husband Ernest Lamar Shade. Ernestine is survived by a step-son, step-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A homegoing celebration will be held Monday July 24, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the Corpening Memorial Chapel of McCain Funeral Home & Cremations; interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
