Barbara Jean Whiteside passed away on September 21, 2023, after battling a long illness at UNC Health Blue Ridge. She was born on May 30, 1955, in Morganton, NC, to William Crisp, Sr. and Vera Johnson Crisp. Barbara was a 1974 graduate of Freedom High School and a member of the New Hope In Christ Church. Barbara garnered employment from Hanes Corporation, J. Iverson Riddle Development Center, Case Farms, and the Burke County Public School System throughout her active working years. After 20 years of dedicated public service, Barbara retired from the State of North Carolina in 1998. She cherished cooking, tending to her yellow rose bush, gardening, traveling, dancing, reveling in laughter, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and friends while listening to Aretha Franklin and other Old Soul music artists and was an avid fan of Steve Harvey, Family Feud and Tyler Perry Films.
In 1978, Barbara married Lock Whiteside, Jr., and they were blessed with three children and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lock Whiteside, Jr.; son, Thomas Lamont Whiteside; parents, Vera Johnson Crisp and William Crisp, Sr.; and brother William Crisp, Sr.
She is survived by her daughter, EConfra Whiteside, and son, Lock Whiteside, III,(Dane) of Garner, NC, and granddaughters Janiya Whiteside (Charlotte) and Tyana Whiteside (Morganton). Barbara is also survived by five siblings - Janice Crisp (Morganton), Roxanna Michaux (Charlotte), Tony Crisp (Morganton), Michael Crisp (Hickory), and Chad Crisp (Jacksonville). Barbara had one surviving Aunt, Betty Carter (Morganton). Cousins, Theresa Mae Gibbs, Linda Heathe, Alfreda McElrath, Debra McElrath, Vickie Crisp, Susan Crisp, Vanessa Johnson, and Bryan McElrath. Additionally, Sisters-in- Love: Mimmie Harrison, Melissa Crisp, Stephanie Davenport, Sherri Johnson, and Doris Bristol, Brother-in-Law David Whiteside, hairstylists/friends Mrs. Hazel Evans, Maggie Scott, and Sharhonda Fields, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A funeral service will be held Thursday September 28, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at New Hope in Christ Church, with Pastor LaTrese Lyerly serving as the eulogist; interment will follow at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
