Mr. Alvin James Mills, "Pig", was born June 25, 1946 in Dade County, Florida to the late Mr. Thomas Mills Sr. and the late Queen Dye Mills. He departed this earthly life for his eternal reward on Friday November 17, 2023 at Amorem Hospice in Valdese. He graduated from Mays High School in Miami, Florida (class of 1964) and later attained college credits. He was united in holy matrimony to Mrs. Beatrice Kelly and to this union four children were born. Alvin served his country in the United States Marine Corps, receiving an honorable discharge after four dedicated years of service. He worked for the United States Postal Service for thirty-four years, retiring as the first Black Postmaster of Lincolnton, NC. He was a member of Slades Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church where he served as a delegate to the A.M.E. Zion Convention and a steward. In his spare time, his passion was for golf, and was an active member of the Spencer Thomas Eagle Makers (STEM) Golf Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sylvia King and a brother Robert Mills.
Left to mourn his loss but cherish his precious memories is his beloved wife Beatrice Mills of the home; children Alvin Mills Jr. of Morganton, Queen Mills-Calhoun (Lloyd) of Durham, NC, and Pettis Mills (Melissa) of Morganton; one brother Thomas Mills Jr. (Patrice) and one sister Dr. Peggy Mills-Demon both of Georgia; grandchildren Akiqula Mills, Caredio King, Quentin Calhoun, Javon Mills, Jarell Mills, and Jalen Mills; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A funeral service celebrating the life of Mr. Alvin James Mills will be held Friday, November 24, 2023 at 12:00 noon at Slades Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church with Rev. Stephen Wingate presiding and Rev. Thomas Mills Jr. serving as the eulogist; interment will follow at Burke Memorial Park with military honors rendered by the United States Marine Corps. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
