Mrs. Alice Kay Avery Powell, 68 of Morganton, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday December 18, 2022, at College Pines Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Born on April 9, 1954, in Burke County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Avery and Janie Pearson. She received her education in the Burke County school system and upon graduation, attended college. Alice retired as a teacher's aide, with over 20 years of service, from the NC School for the Deaf. She also worked for the City of Morganton at the Recreation Center. She volunteered at Grace Hospital, Valdese General Hospital, and the Good Samaritan Clinic at Burke Christian Ministries. She was a faithful member of Gaston Chapel A.M.E. Church where she served as an usher. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Edward Powell and sister Edith Mae Pearson.
Left to cherish her precious memories are her sons Corey Avery (Sarah Foster) of Mt. Holly and Jason Avery of Morganton; sisters Suzette Avery of Morganton, Florence Caldwell of Morganton, and Norma Pearson of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A homegoing celebration will be held Friday December 23, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. at the Corpening Memorial Chapel of McCain Funeral Home & Cremations; the family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service.
